March for safety

The marchers turned their attention to Ward 70 councillor Dave Dewes.

Hundreds of residents fed up with skyrocketing crime in Florida made their voices heard today as they marched down Goldman Street.

Chanting struggle songs as they headed towards the Florida Police Station, the marchers included ANC members from ward 70 such as chairperson Nkosana Miya, Antoni Francis and Bafana Khumalo.

They said the community of Florida was tired of the increasing crime in the area.

When they arrived at the station, they were met by police spokesperson Lydia Dikolomela and Shift commander Captain Ivy Mabuso.

Miya read from the memorandum of demands which included having a satellite office in Fleurhof, take a tougher stance on crime in Florida, root out police protecting drug peddlers and not let crime go out of control.

“Ward 70 has become a drug haven and our children are being targeted outside their schools. They are robbed on a daily basis. Police are not taking action against such criminals. In Fleurhof, police presence is non-existant and this has made the criminals brazen. There is also alleged bribery by the drug peddlers on police,” he said.

Mabuso signed the memorandum that was handed over by Miya while Dikolomela addressed the crowd of marchers.

“We appreciate the effort you have put into marching here and giving us your demands. Every bit helps and as residents in the area, you are welcome to list your grievances and we will work hard to keep everyone safe,” said Dikolomela.

The memorandum intended for the councillor was different from the one they handed over in Florida.

Some of the demands in the memorandum included problems regarding service delivery, the high rate of unemployment and corruption within the ward.

The marchers demanded a reply from Florida Police Station and Dewes within seven working days.
