Roan out to make a difference

The Hoërskool Florida pupil was recently crowned Mr Junior Teen South Africa 2015/2016.

“Helping a person will not necessarily change the whole world, but it will change the world for that person” is one of the quotes Roan Gonsalves holds dear to his heart.

The Hoërskool Florida pupil was recently crowned Mr Junior Teen South Africa 2015/2016.

The grade 10 pupil won the prestigious title last month when the event was held at the ACPP Hall in Pretoria.

Roan is no stranger to pageants as last year he was crowned Mr Junior King of the Universe and had a chance to represent South Africa in the Teen Mr World competition in Turkey. Unfortunately due to financial constraints, he was unable to attend the event.

The winners and runners-up in each category of the 2015 Miss and Mr Junior South Africa pageant take part in charity and community work within their respective provinces.

They aim to brighten up the lives of those less fortunate than themselves.

Some of the charity work involves includes visiting the sick and elderly in hospital, AIDS homes, Children’s and old age homes.

“During my year of reign, I want to assist the people less fortunate than us because together we can make a difference in our community and South Africa,” said Roan.

Roan is currently working with Africa Food for Thought, a non-profit organization, run by volunteers, which equips and supplies school feeding programmes. Their aim is to help the vulnerable and marginalized. They currently have 13 school feeding projects, seven crèches and five community feeding schemes which feeds over 12 000 children.

Roan is trying to get the community involved to assist with donating items.

“A blanket for us might mean nothing but a blanket to a child less fortunate might mean the world,” he said.
