Claw’s action to alleviate starvation

The community members who helped plant the vegetables, has also started their own vegetable garden at their homes.

In less than four months, Claw (Community Led Animal Welfare) has started a vegetable garden which has ensured about 30 poverty-stricken community members go to bed with full stomachs.

Claw decided to start an organic vegetable garden to feed the hungry in the community. “People [in the community] are battling to get food because of unemployment,” said Cora Bailey, founder of Claw, with sadness in her voice.

“We have been able to provide a nutritious supplement to the community,” Cora said.

Even though Claw depends solely on donations from businesses and individuals, they still find ways to look after the community by growing vegetables.

“We are doing exceptionally well with our vegetable garden,” said Cora.

Claw also sent a staff member for training to further his knowledge on organic gardens. David Khoza who completed a gardening training course for four months in Lesotho, is now teaching the community how to practise sustainable living by planting vegetables.

“The appearance of the farm must tell the story,” David said enthusiastically when describing the beauty of the vegetables.

Claw has a worm farm in which wee from the worms help to make the plants grow faster.

The worm farm provides nutrition to the compost system which assists to make the vegetable garden more beautiful.

David said, “We definitely need more tunnels in order to expand the garden so that more people will be fed.”
