Keeping the nation warm one blanket at a time

WELTEVREDEN PARK – A non-profit organisation, Ignite Africa, aims to donate about 100 blankets to Ikholwa Children's Home on 20 June.

With the cold days slowly creeping in, a non-profit organisation (NPO), Ignite Africa, aims to share warmth with the less fortunate.

This will be their first annual blanket drive which they plan to run every winter.

The organisation aims to donate about 100 blankets for Ikholwa Childrens Home, which is based in Weltevreden Park, on 20 June.

“For some people, winter means cosy fireside snuggles and hearty dinners with friends, for others however, it means frost bites, ” said founder of Ignite Africa Martin Mushamiri.

“A lot of people don’t have shelter and a basic luxury of a blanket – we thought it would be great to share some warmth this winter,” Mushamiri added.

“We chose Ikholwa House because we believe in and support their vision. The home was born out of the need to give hope of improved life to abandoned and orphaned children who have been infected or affected by HIV/AIDS,” said Mushamiri.

The organisation will also donate blankets to two charities in Zimbabwe on 20 June.

In an effort to give back to the community, local resident Lorna Greyling from Melville Wellness Centre donated 100 blankets to the organisation.

“It is our responsibility to make a difference in the best way possible,” said Greyling.

“I am really happy I could help the less fortunate – there are small children out there who are cold at night and I just wanted to make a small difference in the community,” said Greyling.
