Team Monash saves the environment one tree at a time

RUIMSIG — Monash students and Miss Earth ambassadors team up and clean up.

Following World Environment Day on 5 June, Monash South Africa (MSA) student and Miss Earth finalist Rumbi Zindi teamed up with the MSA team to plant trees at West Rand Primary Mine School.

The team from the university in Ruimsig donated and planted trees at the school, the university’s partner for the Possibility Programme, where business partners and principals support and encourage one another.

Meanwhile on 6 June, Miss Earth ambassadors from Gauteng took part in the first #TeamUptoCleanUp with City of Joburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau. The initiative by the City of Joburg and Lead SA is to encourage people and communities to take the bull by the horns in cleaning up their areas.

According to Zindi, on average about 18 000 tons of general waste is illegally dumped in the country every year. Environmental week highlighted the issue of waste management and littering.

The Miss Earth South Africa is a programme that aims to empower young South African Women with knowledge and a platform to create a sustainable difference in our plight to combat the destruction of our natural heritage.
