Sword murder teen finally in Sterkfontein

Depending on the psychiatric report, the state will notion to either have the teenager embark on a diversion program or go ahead with prosecution.

The sword murder-accused teenager that was arrested in December last year has finally been admitted to Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation.

This after a February article in which the Record reported there was no space for him in the hospital. The case was continuously postponed until a bed became available for him and he was admitted on Monday 8 June. He briefly appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday prior to his admission.

The teen will undergo 30 days of psychiatric evaluation during which it will be established whether he can differentiate between right and wrong and can follow court procedures, his lawyer Aadil Lambat confirmed with the Record today (Wednesday 10 June).

“The possibility of enrolling him in a diversion programme has not yet been discussed,” Lambat said.

He said he expects the teen to next appear in court in July, by which time the psychiatric report should be finalized.

The boy allegedly murdered his grandmother, 76, with a sword on 15 December last year in their Georginia home last year. She suffered a fatal wound to the neck and was also stabbed in the chest. Prior to the murder, the boy was completing his Grade 10 year at Hoërskool Florida.
