Roodepoort SPCA manager explains pet adoption

ROODEPOORT – Pet adoption process explained and simplified.

Roodepoort SPCA manager Mandi Cattanach said the adoption process at the organisation starts with a pre-home inspection prior to adopting an animal.

“Our inspectors have to ensure that the property and family are suitable for the breed of animal that is being adopted. For example, a husky can’t be homed to a small townhouse complex or to a family who doesn’t have sufficient time to take it out for walks and groom the dog.”

She also said that it’s important for families to bring in their own pets for a compatibility introduction at the SPCA premises with the prospective new pet. This is done to make sure that the new pet will fit in with the family and existing pets and to ensure that it will not be returned a week later.

“Every pet is sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped before leaving the SPCA because there are way too many unwanted animals in the world,” added Cattanach.

She said the adoption fees start at R400 for adult cats, R550 for kittens and R600 for an adult dog or puppy.

“After the adoption is finalised, our inspectors will conduct a post-home inspection – this has to happen to ensure that the pet has settled into their new home and to make sure that there is no animal welfare problems,” concluded Cattanach.
