GALLERY: They are the district champs
ALLEN'S NEK – Allen Glen High School are district champions as they beat Princess High School.
Home ground advantage paid off for Allen Glen High School when they played against Princess High School in the District 12 (D12) finals at the school on 29 May.
The game was no walk in the park for both teams as the first half went through without either of them putting the ball into the net.
A few minutes into the second half, the visiting team, Princess High School scored the first goal.
Allen Glen had great ball possession throughout the game and came to equalise the score and eventually scored their second goal.
The 2 –1 score saw Allen Glen walking off as the District Champions and will go on to represent the district against other districts in August.
Head of the department (HOD) of sport at the school, Hennie van Vuuren, said this was a remarkable performance by their senior soccer team.
“It’s the first time in years that we see this type of good performance from our soccer team,” explained Van Vuuren.
A combination of dedicated players and proper coaches and structures is what Van Vuuren attributes to this achievement.
The team is coached by former Bafana Bafana player Bevan Bowers together with Darren Hodson.
“Throughout the season, our senior team went unbeaten and won all their games,” added Van Vuuren who proudly stated that the school indeed has quality players.
Coach Bowers said an addition to this improved performance is that players are encouraged to belong to soccer clubs so that they can get used to playing competitive soccer.
