5 reasons why you should spoil your child today

Your child will probably love the sound of 1 June when they hear why the day is so special.

Today is International Children’s Day and this should be a good enough reason to go that extra mile for your child.

So where did it all begin?

It all started with the UN (United Nations) who implemented this idea mainly for the well-being of children throughout the world.

Back in 1925, the League of Nations introduced the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child which is about children who has physical and mental disabilities. This emphasised that the child needed to be taken care of and the child’s welfare should be promoted. The following year, the first World Conference on the Wellbeing of Children took place in Geneva, and announced that 1 June will be International Children’s Day.

Japan celebrates Children’s Day on 5 March annually since 1948. It was traditionally a festival for boys, but girls are celebrated too on 3 March.

In China, International Children’s day is a public holiday for all children. It was initially a half-day holiday which was declared by the State Council but in 1956, it was converted into a full-day’s holiday.

Now, with all that background information, you should be persuaded to celebrate this important day with your child.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Take them to their favourite restaurant and because it is their ‘special’ day today; if they cannot finish their food, smile and let it go.

2. Write them a note and this time, without telling them what their chores for the day are. Instead, let them know how much mommy and daddy loves them.

3. Should you be tired after a long day at work allow them to watch a movie tonight. Perhaps their most-liked Harry Potter movie? Yes mom and dad, even though they have school tomorrow.

4. Get creative and role-play their favourite superheroes. If they are, for instance superman, you could be Captain America and slay them (with fake swords and props).

5. Lastly, just spend time with them because their lives are precious and important.

If you have lost a child, you can still celebrate by honouring and remembering them.

Happy International Children’s Day!
