Ridgevale primary’s community council hard at work

Ridgevale Primary School's community council is hard at work, donating vegetable seeds to crèches in the West Rand.

Ridgevale Primary School’s community council paid a visit to the Popza Crechè in Krugersdorp this week.

The pupils donated vegetable seeds to the crèche, encouraging them to grow a vegetable garden.

Chanè van Rensburg from the Department of Health’s Nutrition office was also in attendance to welcome the pupils.

She is part of the Community Based Nutrition Programme which helps crèches in the West Rand provide balanced meals for their pupils.

“The department provides funding for crèches so they can cook balanced meals for their pupils. To get the funding, these institutions must apply to the department and supply a health certificate. However, most of them don’t qualify for the certificate. To make sure they don’t fall through the cracks, we encourage them to look for other nutritional food sources such as growing a vegetable garden and use other inexpensive food sources such as Mabele and mielies. We focus on institutions from high risk areas that tend to be vulnerable,” she said.

The programme funds institutions in Krugersdorp and Randfontein at R13,50 per child every day.

It currently supports 45 creche’s in these areas.

The young pupils at the crèche welcomed their guests with a song before giving them a guided tour.

They then showed off their knowledge of different vegetables to their guests.
