BREAKING NEWS: Shootout as cigarette truck hijacking goes awry

Unsuspecting police Captain lucky to survive.

A wild shootout between hijackers and a police officer ensued after the hijacking of a cigarette truck was foiled.

A police patrol bakkie was patrolling the area around Mouton Street when by chance he came upon a hijacking in progress on the corner of Mouton and Killburn Street.

The suspects fled with the British American Tabacco (Bat) truck while other gang members followed in a white BMW and charcoal metallic Fortuner. The police vehicle gave chase and as the hijackers sped down Killburn Street past Hoërskool Roodepoort, another unsuspecting police captain was driving from the opposite direction. The suspects panicked and shots were fired between them and the captain.

The first police vehicle continued to chase the suspects but they escaped. The Bat truck was found behind Westgate Shopping Centre with most of its stock.

A helicopter also helped in the search but to no avail.

The police officer came off unscathed.

The Record is currently awaiting official comment from Roodepoort Police.
