Die Burger pupil arrested for drugs

“The initiaitive forms part of the police’s school safety programme,” police told the Record.

A male Hoërskool Die Burger pupil, 19, is due in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court after being arrested during a social crime prevention exercise last week.

The Florida Police and various other role players visited the school on Thursday 21 May to conduct searches of the pupils and sensitise them about the dangers and consequences of drug abuse, spokesperson Lydia Dikolomela in a press statement said.

“The initiaitive forms part of the police’s school safety programme,” she told the Record.

Cigarettes were confiscated from pupils after which various police officials spoke to the children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. One boy was found to be in the possession of eight packets of dagga and was subsequently arrested, charged and detained, Dikolomela said.

Acting school principal Barney Lotter told the Record he is focusing on creating a healthy learning environment for the pupils.

“We want to restore the school’s reputation to its former glory by emphasising discipline, law and order,” he said.

Lotter believes the children’s conduct has already dramatically improved in comparison to the situation a few months ago.
