Their message is clear

ZANDSPRUIT – In mark of Child Protection Week, children take to the streets to make their voices heard.

Kicking off Child Protection Week, children from different day-care centres together with their teachers and Honeydew Police embarked on a peaceful march through the streets of Zandspruit.

Championing the issues that affect them as children, the little ones bravely and took to the streets and sang songs entailing their rights and responsibilities.

Spokesperson for Honeydew Police Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said she hoped that initiatives like this one would help children break the silence if they are being abused.

The march started at the Zandspruit taxi-rank and ended at Realeboga Pre-Primary. The walk was a stiff exercise for some of the little ones, but highlighted the sense of ubuntu of some of the children as they carried those who were tired on their backs.

Principal of Realeboga Pre-Primary Rebecca Matewane said they wanted to raise awareness about child abuse in the whole community and let people know that children need to be protected as they are future leaders of the country. Matiwane said as teachers they constantly speak to children on abuse issues so that they are aware and know when they are being abused and hopes that it will enable children to report the crime to relevant authorities.

Matiwane also expressed her gratitude to Honeydew Police and said they are always available to step in and assist them whenever they had issues of child abuse.
