Goldman Street: Drug deals a common thing

Goldman Street is rife with drug dealers.

Residents have grown tired of the endless fight against drug abuse and drug trafficking in the busy Goldman Street.

This is apparent from the large response the Record received after an initial report on a shop in the CBD allegedly selling drugs.

“I have several times sent an anonymous tip-off to the police with a dealer’s contact details and his location, but it has amounted to nothing,” resident Theona* told the Record.

“I would honestly like to play a role in having something done? not only to get the dealers behind bars but to save the lives that are often destroyed by this industry.”

Recovering drug addict Ryan* on a previous occasion told the Record “you could spot a runner [drug dealer] every 10 to 20 metres on Goldman Street”. In communication afterwards he said he honestly has no idea how the Florida Police are dealing with the situation.

A tenant of nearby flats that are “infested with drug dealers” told the Record she regularly sees two Nigerian nationals selling drugs through the fence to their clients, who regularly waits at the corner.

“The most painful thing is they hide their drugs around my dwelling, inside a drain water pipe and in the flower beds,” she said.

She knows where the drug dealers reside. Another resident also alleged that some of the car guards on the street deal drugs on the side.

As the investigation into the drug scene continues, the Record checked the amount of drug-related articles written in recent months about the area: 17 people have been arrested on drug charged of which eight arrests were in close proximity to Goldman Street. Last week, the Florida Police busted a large dagga green house in Florida Hills, where a man, 31 and woman, 26 were arrested.

The Record today (Monday 25 May) asked station commander Colonel Cassie Rautenbach how they plan to tighten their grip on drug dealers in Florida.

“The Florida Police daily respond to and follow leads on crimes that are drug-related,” he said.

“Goldman Street has long been a hub for both the dealers and users but it is considered every time we have an operation.”

Rautenbach pointed the Record to a recent increase in arrests in connection with drug use and drug deals. In the meanwhile spokesperson Lydia Dikolomela committed to compiling a statement with regards to drug arrests in and around Goldman Street in the past fortnight.

Report suspicious persons and activities to the Florida Police on 011 831 7000.
