“Domestic workers should be more vigilant” –Police

Teach your domestic worker how to be safe in your home.

It is of utmost importance that domestic workers know the roles they play in crime prevention, according to the Roodepoort Police.

A recent press statement by spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo laid emphasis on this by saying police request residents to inform their domestic workers to not open doors and gates to strangers. This includes those who claim to work for the municipality and those who claim to visit to repair things on the property.

“The amount of house robberies in Roodepoort has become problematic,” Khumalo stated.

She said it became a concern when they analysed recent crime statistics, noticing suspects often approached domestic workers saying they are visiting to take measurements for tiling purposes, for curtain rails or for plumbing purposes.

“The police advise house owners to instruct domestic workers not to open the door to anyone without their [house owners’] prior arrangement.

“Domestic workers should not even call their employers to verify what strangers are claiming,” Khumalo said, referring to a case where a domestic worker was robbed while phoning to verify information.

According to Roodepoort CPF chairman Leon Vieira, the committee takes the crime prevention education of domestic workers very seriously and are currently rounding up stakeholders to create a larger domestic forum.

“Successful domestic forums were previously successfully held by the Helderkloof Neighbourhood Watch, but we hope to incorporate them into a larger Roodepoort-wide forum,” Vieira told the Record.

The plans are in motion but event dates have not yet been confirmed.

“Report suspicious people to the Roodepoort Police,” Khumalo urged.
