Sector 3 saddened by the passing of Daniel Smith

HONEYDEW – Sector 3 chairman says it was a privilege to work with the late Daniel Smith.

Honeydew Community Policing Forum announced that one of its founding members, Sector 3 chairman Daniel Smith passed away on 20 May.

Earlier this year, Smith stepped down from his position due to ill health, explained Honeydew CPF chairman Tony Botes.

“Smith was unanimously elected and inducted as the chair of the newly created Sector 3 of the Honeydew Community Police Forum in late 2011. After the original six sectors were rationalised into four, the original sectors 4 and 6 became the enormous Sector 3.”

He added, “I was privileged to have been elected as his deputy and it was an even greater privilege to have been able to experience his dynamic dedication to bonding the two distinct and fragmented groups into one cohesive unit.”

Botes said Sector 3 is a difficult one to manage as it comprises agricultural holdings, high-density residential complexes and upmarket residential areas and a whole plethora of shopping centres.

“Honeydew SAPS was waging a difficult war against crime, as is common knowledge, and I have no doubt that Daniel’s commitment to the community played a significant role in the ongoing successes of the Police Service, due to his tireless commitment and interaction between his Sector 3 constituents and all levels of the SAPS. Smith has left us gigantic shoes to fill when we hold elections for a new chairperson in June, but I am positive that, with the co-operation and support of the Sector 3 community, we will be able to continue his legacy.”

Botes concluded and said, “On behalf of the Honeydew Community Policing Forum, the sector team and community, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Daniel’s family and friends in this time of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with them through these difficult days ahead.”
