Joint operation removes 200kg of illegally connected cables

ZANDSPRUIT – Eskom, City Power, Metro Police and Honeydew Police join forces to remove illegal connections in Zandspruit Informal Settlement.

On 18 May Honeydew Police together with Metro Police, Eskom and City Power conducted an operation in Zandspruit, to search for illegal electricity connections.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said she was surprised when the total number of illegal cables came to the tally of

200 kg.

Metro Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, “Four Eskom vans were filled up with cables and there was no resistance and no casualties during the operation.”

WO Jacobs added that other areas like Marina Drive and Pierre Road in Honeydew, were also cleared of illegal cables.

Ward 97 Councillor Jaco Engelbrecht thanked the police and Eskom for clearing Pierre Road of illegal connections.

He further added that City Power has started with an initiative to change all of the new streetlight cables to aluminium, which is less desirable to steal than the traditional copper cables.

“The illegal connection operation was done due to the high theft of electricity and the danger of these connections. These types of operations will continue in the future,” concluded WO Jacobs.

Comment from Eskom is awaited.
