Florida woman falls prey to mob justice

Bystanders look on as pistol gets shoved into victim's mouth.

A 24-year-old resident of Florida, Venetia Morilly, allegedly fell victim to mob justice this past Sunday, while employees of a rental agency allegedly stood by drinking without stopping the assault.

Morilly was at Florida station when three Zimbabwean nationals, who she says stay in the same block of flats as her friend, confronted her regarding the alleged theft of their washing. They forced her into their vehicle and took her back to their flat in Fourth Avenue where the alleged theft took place. They assaulted her, hitting her with their fists and a sjambok. Morilly claims she took the clothing off her friend’s washing line by accident on a previous occasion.

The men then took Morilly to her own home where she says she gave the men their T-shirts back but they forced her back in the car once again.

On the way back to the suspects flat in Fourth Avenue they allegedly held a firearm to her head and told her “they are going to take her to Soweto and her family will never see her again” before they kicked her out of the vehicle.

A witness called the police but by the time they arrived the suspects had left. Morilly sustained serious head and kidney injuries and she was rushed to the Helen Joseph Hospital. She was discharged on Tuesday.

Morilly’s friend told the Record the victim is now so traumatised she does not want to go back to her own residence. For reasons that are unclear the rental agency has banned her from the premises after the incident.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Florida Police and the Record is awaiting their comment.

The rental agency could not be reached for comment yet.
