Attorney sexually assaulted in Roodepoort home

The informant wrote the police were reluctant to help her, but a female Roodepoort detective “stepped up” and took steps to have a suspect arrested.

The Roodepoort Police confirmed that a female attorney was sexually assaulted in her home last Tuesday night 12 May.

According to information the Record received, the victim lives in Roodekrans and is passionate about her job, advocating women and children’s rights. Her identity is not yet known to the Record.

The Record has attempted to contact the informant on numerous platforms but have to date not received a response or further details to confirm the information. However, Roodepoort Police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo confirmed that a case of sexual assault was opened with them last week. A man, 57, was arrested in connection with the case and appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday 18 May.

The Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court did not confirm this court appearance and could not provide further details to the Record yet.

“The case is still under investigation,” Khumalo said.

According to a recent Times Live report, a thousand men suspected of being serial rapists are walking the streets of South Africa. Police Minister Nathi Nhleko has not yet signed a policy document that is described as basic to assisting the police in tracking and arresting them, the report states, despite it having been ready for his signature since March.
