Ward 97 councillor Jaco Engelbrecht explained that nine roads in the suburb received the new streetlights in March but they were only working on 7th of May.

Resident Shirley Young said, “The lights were all installed at the end of March but we were all still in darkness until May.”

Engelbrecht explained that Hans, Henry, Johan, Bothma and Cruiser streets, and Pierre, Potgieter, Glover and Wilge roads all received new streetlights.

“The suburb is well lit now and it should be safer with regard to travelling around at night, and the crime levels should be lower as well. The residents can also send in an application for speed bumps on Pierre Road as one of the requirements for speed bumps from the City is that the street has to have sufficient light at night.”

Engelbrecht was still unsure as to why the completed streetlights were off for a month after they were all planted and connected to the grid.

“All the new streetlights are working now and I have to thank City Power for making Ruimsig brighter and safer,” concluded Engelbrecht.
