Litter picked in Princess in successful DA operation

With community participation and each participant donning rubber gloves and a large plastic bag, the mounds of trash were bagged in a jiffy.

With no bins, skips or regular trash collection by the municipality residents and volunteers scrounged out litter side-by-side last weekend.

On Saturday 16 May the community, ward councillor, ward members and DA constituency leaders tackled and successfully completed a clean-up operation in Princess informal settlement.

With the residents not having access to basic municipal services like trash collection and not having a central point at which they discard of trash, the dusty ‘streets’ of Princess were lined with discarded plastic, papers, glass and rotten foods.

Roodepoort constituency head, member of parliament Anchen Dreyer accompanied Ward 85 councillor Carl Mann on a tour of the problematic areas within the greater Roodepoort.

Possible solutions for Princess informal settlement, like the installation of skips for community trash collection and an agreement with Pikitup on regular collections were discussed, which Mann will further on behalf of the community.
