200 arrests during Operation Fiela

MULDERSDRIFT — Hundreds of suspects nabbed in Muldersdrift as part of nationwide initiative.

The crime prevention Operation Fiela resulted in the arrest of more than 200 suspects from 11 to 17 May.

Suspects were arrested for various crimes including robbery, rape, murder and housebreaking.

“Crimes varied from serious to less serious offences including illegal immigrants and dealing in liquor without a licence. All arrested suspects are expected to appear in courts on 18 May,” said spokesperson for the Muldersdrift Police Warrant Officer Hitler Ngwenya.

Krugersdorp Cluster Commander, Major General Anna Mateisi applauded the good work and dedication of the men and women in blue from the various police stations in the area.

“These successes were due to the perseverance and dedication shown by SAPS members and the public in the Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift areas,” Maj Gen Mateisi added.

Operation Fiela was launched nationwide in April, in Gauteng. More than 400 arrests were made in relation to various crimes. It has come under scrutiny for targeting illegal immigrants in townships, where police officers have been backed by the army to rid several areas of criminal activity following the spate of xenophobic attacks.
