Outrage over traffic act amendment

Drastic measures a response to carnage on roads.

Changes to to the Road Traffic Act that will lower the speed limit across the board, has motorists up in arms.

According to the draft act that was announced on Monday, motorists in future will have to keep to the speed limit of 100km/h on freeways, 80km/h on open roads and 40km/h in urban areas.

The amendment is allegedly in response to the carnage on South African roads.

The amended act also proposes that motorists who want to renew their licenses will go through a practical exam as well as an oral test.

Workers will only be allowed to be transported on the back of vehicles if enclosed and in limited numbers and school children being transported for money on the back of bakkies will be banned.

Trucks of more than nine ton will be banned from the road between 6am and 9am and 5pm and 8pm.
