Police: On hijackings and serial numbers

Given the high number of house breakings in the greater Roodepoort area the Honeydew Cluster police warn residents to record serial numbers.

The Honeydew Cluster includes Roodepoort, Florida, Honeydew, Dieplsloot, Douglasdale and Randburg. Cluster spokesperson Karen Jacobs said that a lack of recorded serial numbers both make it harder to trace stolen items and harder to return them to their rightful owners.

“We request that you ensure you have recorded the serial numbers, make and model of all electronic equipment, especially with regards to computers and laptops.

“Keep these details in a safe place.”

Should items be stolen, individuals should be able to provide those specifics to police when opening a case.

Jacobs also warns that hijackings in front of property gates are prevalent in the area.

“Be careful when arriving or leaving your residence ― keep a look out for suspicious persons in the street and movements near your gate.

“Check the vehicle mirrors for any vehicle following you and drive around the block before leaving the area or returning to it, especially if you’ve driven home from the airport.

“Ensure that you have adequate light at the entrance of your property and that there are no obstructions; immediately close and lock your gates once inside.”
