Orchestra pioneer takes final bow

This was due to Weiss’ proposals and this led to the establishment of various ensembles in the musical performing arts.

Weiss Doubell, performing arts pioneer, founder CEO of Pro Musica Productions, and orchestral conductor has taken his final bow.

The passionate lover of books, wine and the arts died at the age of 71 last week Wednesday. One of his biggest legacies is the Pro-Musica productions.

With the Roodepoort Civic theatre established in 1980, it became not only a receiving theatre but a producing theatre with its own production units.

These included the Rand Chamber Music Orchestra, Rand Afrikaans University Choir, Pro Musica Opera Production Company and Pro Musica Orchestra.

He was also known to promote the young vocal and instrumental talent of South African performing arts.

Up until 2008 when Weiss retired, the Pro Musica presented 400 opera performances and 500 symphony concerts under his guidance.

After retirement, Weiss spent time with his family, treasured music collection and reading La Vita.

Weiss leaves behind his wife Rita, daughters Cecile and Grethe, sons-in-law Stefan and Mike and grandchildren Rudi, Gabrielle and Jean, and various friends and colleagues from the performing arts community.

For any enquiries about commemoration arrangements that will take place 17 May, please contact Cecile Doubell-Fourie on 083 383 2960.
