Illegal dumping raises concern

The dumping has also led to people scavenging in the field.

Some residents of Candlewood Village in Georginia are fed up with the illegal dumping taking place in Tornado Crescent.

According to Noleen Thompson, trucks dump building materials in the field up to four times a day.

The area is unkempt, with weeds and bushes growing without maintenance.

“Our complex is near the field and we see it daily. With the bushes so thick and high, it’s an issue because criminals hide there,” said Noleen.

According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department by-laws, illegal dumping carries a fine and is divided into three categories.

For small litter such as bottles, paper and cardboard a R500 fine is applicable, for a bakkie load a R1000 fine and for building rubble a R1500 fine will be issued.

Illegal dumping can be reported to the Director of JMPD bylaws, Sam Sethagu on 011 490 1630 or at samse@joburg.org.za
