Flora Clinic has nurses with heart

A good nurse is competent and confident and shows compassion for his or her patients.

In celebration of International Nurses Day today (12 May) Flora Clinic nursing staff recommitted themselves to the Nurses Pledge.

Led by Annamrie Fourie, the nursing manager and Anthea Myers, the nursing standards manager, the male and female nurses reaffirmed their commitment to the health of their patients. At the gathering Fourie started the celebrations with a speech on compassion.

“The patients are treated with dignity and respect, the nurse having put him or herself in the patient’s shoes.”

Fourie said education and attentive listening are part and parcel of a nurse’s job. The patient must understand what the doctors are saying and what their health status is, and the nurse must understand what the patient’s needs are.

The speech was followed by the pledge, whereafter nursing staff were treated to coffee, tea, juice and snack parcels. They are each to receive a gift today from their unit managers, in appreciation of their dedication to healthcare.
