‘We will remember them’

JOBURG — Tributes to the last remaining WWII veterans.

Military members and World War II veterans were honoured at the National Musuem of Military History in Saxonworld on 9 May to mark the 70th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day.

National president of the South African Legion Godfrey Giles said that the day was to commemorate and remember those who fell, those who came home and those who came home wounded.

“We are celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE day. This is to commemorate those that passed on,” he said.

Giles read out a letter from Buckingham Palace, where The Queen sent her sincerest request to remember those who passed on.

Two of the oldest veterans present laid out official wreaths in salutation to the war heroes who were lost in battle. Colonel JA McCardle, who was the guest speaker on the day said, “The celebration recognises the Allies’ contribution to the cause and it is fitting to remember those who gave so much.”

Victory in Europe (VE) Day is a holiday celebrated on 8 May to mark the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces. It marked the end of World War II in Europe.
