Poorte’s try machine

The 29-year old has been part of the club for eight years.

Loyal is one way to describe Roodepoort Rugby Club’s Jesse Geyer.

He was inspired to join by his brother-in-law Eugene Powell who played for the club.

“I came to join when I was 21 and have never been part of another club. This is my home and I won’t play for another club. The excitement I feel when I wear that jersey is great because it is a privilege to represent such a historic rugby club and the unity that is displayed is amazing. We are a group of good friends who work for each other,” said Jesse.

The former Hoërskool Florida pupil started playing rugby at the age of five and his talents has seen him become a constant feature at outside centre for the club’s first team.

The club is different, we play for each other and we do well with the talent and resources that we have,” he said.

With players like Jean de Villiers, Duane Vermeulen and Schalk Burger to inspire him, Jesse has increased his rugby level, scoring regularly for Poorte this year.

“This year I have been working hard, training day and night to be fit so I can contribute more for the team. It always feels fantastic to score a try in any game,” said Jesse.

He often jests with his family that when he dies, he would love to play touch rugby with Jean de Villiers.
