One of cash-in-transit gang arrested

A gang of cash-in-transit thieves were stopped in their tracks when Roodepoort Police arrested one.

The rest fled via two getaway vehicles they had arranged without having stolen anything. On Friday morning 8 May at around 8.30 am police members, while patrolling, stopped at the Total petrol station on Main Reef Road.

“They noticed a suspicious man standing in front of the entrance to the shop and offices and watched him closely,” Roodepoort Police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo told the Record on scene.

“The next minute, he fired off a shot with a gun and they moved fast to arrest him.”

It appears the thieves were hoping to overpower Fidelity Security Group guards as they left the offices with money they were to collect. The other suspects fled in getaway vehicles; one was a light blue Toyota RunX and one a white Toyota Corolla, Khumalo said. The Record arrived on scene as the officers were busy with administration to open a case of attempted murder and armed robbery.

“Luckily no one was injured during the shooting and we managed to recover both the bullet shell and the firearm used,” Khumalo said.

The Roodepoort Police will probe the suspect for details on his accomplices before he appears in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, Khumalo said.
