Break-in markings

RAND PARK RIDGE – Beware of insignia criminals are using to mark hot spots.

A suspicious sign has been seen outside of a home that was broken into in Rand Park Ridge on 29 April.

The sign , a white spray painted arrow, is believed to be an indication of where to gain entrance to rob the property in question.

Residents security WhatsApp groups and relevant social media groups disseminated the picture in order to alert residents.

SOS Security Sean Nicoles said, “We spread the picture to all residents to create awareness and make it more difficult for criminals to succeed.”

Douglasdale CPF Sector 1 chairman Sean Gouws commented, “We will be on the lookout for any such insignia as well as other kinds of suspicious markings in the area. We are also aware of individuals taking photos of houses; we believe they use this to survey security measures.”

Randburg Police Station acting station commander Captain Andries Odendaal said, “We have not been notified of such things happening in our area as of late, however, we will remain vigilant.”

Further police comment came from Linden SAPS operations manager Captain Alex Vermaak, who said, “The station has not seen any spray painted signs in the area. We do however encounter markings with materials such as tiles, bricks or tins that are out of place, but do not attract any attention. It has been seen in only same cases of house break-ins.”

Residents are advised to be vigilant and take extra precautions over the long weekend.
