Local hip-hop academy dominates national competition

WEST RAND — Local hip-hop dancers take top honours at national championships.

Dancers at Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy (MGHHDA) raked in the medals and awards at the Battle of the Giants Hip Hop Dance Championships from 10 to 12 April.

More than 150 dancers from the academy took part in the national competition and did not put their school to shame in different categories from battles, crews and teams to hip hop street.

Proud choreographer and owner of MGHHDA Mario Gomes said, “The highlight of the competition was the dancers in the World Trial Circuit who are working toward obtaining points to be able to qualify to represent South Africa at the IDO Hip Hop World Championships in Italy this October.”

His students, who are between the ages of four to over 30, achieved the following results for the ultimate bragging rights:

Kahos Mega Crew ages 8 to 11 are currently in first place.

Hush Mega Crew ages 12 to 15 are currently in second place.

LXD Mega Crew ages 16 to 23 are currently in fourth place.

Lil Flawless All Girls Crew ages 8 to 11 are currently in first place.

Lil Precision All Boys Crew Ages 8 to 11 are currently in second place.

Jnr Precision All Boys Crew Ages 12 to 15 are currentlyin third place

Jnr Flawless All Girls Crew ages 12 to15 are currently in fourth place

Precision Crew All Girls Crew Ages 16 to 21 are currently in third place.

“These results are for the whole South Africa, and being a small academy on the West Rand, this is great achievement,” Gomes added.

Gomes currently supports 30 underprivileged/street dancers from different towships with free dance lessons, transport and competition fees. He said support and sponsors are desperately needed to further their achievements.
