Eskom announces maintenance festival

JOBURG – The power utility says a number of generating units will be taken offline while those that have broken down will be repaired over the long weekend.

Residents are in for what is called a long weekend maintenance festival.

The power utility announced that a number of generating units will be taken offline while those that have broken down will be repaired during the weekend.

“We are looking forward to the maintenance festival as weekends and public holidays are when businesses shut down, so we are using this opportunity to ensure that we are dealing with problems, and fixing generating units,” said Eskom’s spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe, adding that this is to ensure that there is no backlog during winter.

However, during the maintenance festival, Phasiwe highlighted that there is a slight likelihood of load shedding.

What to do when there is load shedding.

• Get yourself battery-operated lights: you can get torches and other battery operated lights to keep around the house when the power goes off – it’s less dangerous than using candles.

• Get a gas stove: a gas stove is essential when there is no electricity, you can use it to cook or bake, and it is cost-efficient.

• Learn how to braai: call friends over for a braai and enjoy spending quality time while braaing.

• Buy a power bank: this will enable you to charge your phone and stay connected with your friends and family during load shedding.

• Read a book: use a candle and read that interesting book that you’ve always wanted to read.
