POORTVIEW – Featherbrooke Estate raises much needed funds for the Black Eagle Project Roodekraans.

The Featherbrooke Estate community held their second annual Young Eagles Obstacle Challenge on 18 April to raise funds for the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans.

The fun and challenging obstacle course was set up by Fizique and the children and their parents all took part in the various activities which included sack races, egg and spoon races, three-legged-races, hula hoop competitions and the famous catching an apple from a bowl of water and fishing out sweets from a bowl of flour.

A total of R6 600 was raised for the Black Eagle Project based at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden which will be used toward the conservation of the two resident Black Eagles.

The Black Eagle Project Roodekrans was founded 1992 and the project’s core function is to monitor the pair of Black Eagles that have nested on the ridge at the Garden and to protect their habitat.

Advisor Bo van der Lecq said, “The first sighting of eagles in the area was in 1940 and the female that currently lives in the area is approximately 35-years-old [or older]. These eagles are the only pair on the West Rand.” The eagles have recently laid two eggs and are currently in the incubation stage.

Organiser Shona Jonsson said, “I was so excited about this fundraiser. Our Black Eagles are very close to my heart. It is such a privilege to be sharing their environment.”

Jonsson also thanked all the participants and sponsors including Remax Masters, Fizique, DisChem Cradlestone, Food Lovers Market and Flora Life Paramedics.
