Take another look: Groblerspark ‘ghost house’

A resident took the time to film aerial footage of the so-called Groblerspark ghost house for the community's thrills.

For the first time residents can truly appreciate the ghost house from a new angle and enjoy a bird’s eye view.

Footage taken by Discovery resident Diederik Harkema uploaded to YouTube last weekend shows a mansion of a house, abandoned, in relation to neighbouring properties, especially the temporary housing to its right on South Road.

Harkema said that he took the time to visit the ghost house on Sunday 19 April because of his interest in the Record’s front page article, ‘History of the ghost house’ last week. Both on YouTube and facebook he wrote that difficulties with filming due to the weather actually gave the house more of an eery feel to him and his family.

“The weather was completely against me.

“It was more windy [on Sunday] than I have ever attempted to fly the equipment in, which caused a lot of shakiness in the resulting footage.”

Harkema finds it sad that the property has been allowed to decay as much as it did.

Google Maps images of the house are as recent as November 2014, but previous images captured by the mapping service in November 2009 revealed that the house had short precast walls and a gate. The house seems to have still been in a good condition and had windows and doors and a roof.
