Collision after EMS stops to help

In a seeming rush to get to work three people were injured, after colliding with a City of Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) firetruck.

On Friday morning 17 April in early morning traffic a white Mitsubishi bakkie broke down on Main Reef Road while travelling towards Johannesburg, just after the Corlett Avenue intersection. Emergency Services personnel travelling in an EMS firetruck noticed the pulled over vehicle in the left lane and decided to stop to help the male driver.

Shortly after they stopped to help, a blue Toyota Tazz with three occupants collided with the firetruck. The driver has been identified as Duki Malati, 39, by his cousin Lekoko Mogale that responded to the scene.

“My cousin called me at 6.52am to say that he was in a terrible accident and I rushed over,” Mogale told the Record.

“The two people that were travelling with him are colleagues and they were on their way to work together.”

Malati and his colleagues live in Kagiso and travel to work in Robertville together every morning.

EMS Roodepoort station manager P Olivier on scene said that Malati and his colleagues were assessed on scene and taken to Leratong Hospital later.

“One of the occupants of the vehicle complained of chest and neck pains and the other two had lacerations to the head,” he said.

The white Mitsubishi bakkie was still on scene when the Record left.

Metro Police were on scene to assess the situation and an investigation will follow.
