Lights on for City of Joburg and City Power areas

JOBURG – City Power and City of Joburg will keep the lights on for Stage 1 load shedding today.

Eskom will be implementing Stage 1 load shedding countrywide as a result of constrained generating capacity. However, City Power and the City of Joburg will not be load shedding in their areas of supply in Johannesburg following the application of a range of load-limiting interventions.

During this period of constrained supply, City Power will get excess capacity from the Kelvin power station, activation of load limiting in certain areas and ripple control system.

Load limiting allows City Power to remotely monitor household energy usage and curb excessive consumption using smart meters, while ripple control allows the utility to remotely switch off geysers when the grid is under pressure.

City Power urges households and businesses to continue to use electricity sparingly to minimise the need for load shedding. Residents of Johannesburg are asked to switch off non-essential and high energy appliances such as geysers, stoves, heaters and pool pumps during peak hours. Peak periods fall between 6 am and 10 am in the morning as well as between 6pm and 9 pm in the evening.
