Healthy kids for winter

RANDBURG – Paediatrician Dr Klaus Lechner gives some tips to help keep kids healthy for winter.

Dr Klaus Leschner is a paediatrician who practises at [Netcare Olivedale Hospital.

He has a passion for children and has given some tips that will help you protect them from the winter’s flu and colds.

“Winter is a time of colds and flu and one should go back to the basics of three healthy meals a day. Fruit and vegetables are important and also include citrus in their diet,” advised Dr Leschner.

He further reminds parents to keep their kids active with exercise and outdoor play time even though it is winter.

“This will help their body to build up resilience against colds and flu. Limit their screen time – do not allow more than two hours a day of television and electronics.”

According to Dr Leschner, there is no need for too many supplements if a healthy diet and lifestyle are being followed.

However, he does recommend that Omega three and six (fish oil supplements) be taken as it benefits the immune system and helps with concentration.

Flu and meningitis vaccines are recommend together with keeping up to date with your child’s vaccination schedule.

Dr Leschner asks that parents allow the children to have some outside playtime and are not overloaded with extra mural activities.

“Give your children time to relax and play at home. Try not to have too many things in the house, don’t over-complicate their play area. Sometimes it is good to slow down a bit in life and simplify things,” he said.

“Celebrate your children every day because time passes by so quickly. Let them teach you things and, in turn, keep you young.”
