Update: Tension mounts in Davidsonville again

Tension before MEC's arrival.

There were isolated incidents of tyre burning in Davidsonville this morning at 3am.

It is not clear whether this was a spontaneous reaction to the events surrounding Roodepoort Primary yesterday, or if it was the fullfilment of thinly veiled threats uttered before by community leaders.

The Davidsonville Community Forum (DCF) and its supporters yesterday left en masse for the office of Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education Panyaza Lesufi, after he postponed a meeting that has allegedly been set before Easter. They were not able to talk to Lesufi in person.

Community leader Theo van Rensburg told the Record the forum will not be at today’s scheduled meeting at Roodepoort Primary since the group now wants to talk to the Minister of Education, Angie Motshekga.

Early this morning small groups of angry residents were gathering outside the school waiting for the arrival of the MEC. There was also a small contingent of police and the public order policing (Pop) unit present.

Lesufi will report back at 2pm this afternoon the findings of an audit on the financial matters of the school as well as whether the appointment of the three black principals were above board.
