Newclare flats neatened up

With municipal elections looming in the near future all eyes will be on municipalities to establish whether they can currently deliver services to their most desperate residents.

This has been established at the Newclare municipal flats last week where a clean-up operation brought about the question: What does your living situation look like? At the flats, situated on the corner of Hamilton and Downling Streets, the situation is dire. This was highlighted in Ward 82 councillor Susan Steward’s speech before her DA-helpers started helping community members clean around their living quarters.

“We need to have a clean environment for our children to live in,” she passionately stated.

During her speech, Steward noted the rat infestation in the flats and the fact that one of the stairways recently collapsed.

“Dilapidated buildings that have not been tended to after I have personally logged at least 160 complaints recently goes to show how much the current government cares for your safe living,” Steward said.

Furthermore residents’ refuse aren’t being collected by Pikitup at current and no rubbish bins have been made available to them, despite complaints. This sparked the clean-up operation. The vast amount of complaints have led Steward to draw up a petition that was made available to the community to sign on Friday. This petition will be handed over to council.

MP Anchen Dreyer furthered the conversation by stating that election registration stations will be made available to the underprivileged community within the next month or two. She expressed her gratitude towards Steward’s hard work in the community and commended her, saying she is very impressed with what they’ve accomplished.

“Steward is a community woman that has today again shown that she can and she will,” Dreyer said.
