A toast to the annual contest

The Florida Toastmasters recently held their annual International Speech and Evaluation Contest, challenging members to deliver their best speeches.

Member Michael Glencross described it as a “high profile event that always brings out the best in the ambitious speakers”.

At their regular meeting place, the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre, the speech competing was preceded by the evaluation contest. Here evaluators competed to deliver concise, detailed and constructive criticism on a model speech. The speech was delivered by Paul Nicolai, who, though a new member of the club delivered a fascinating demonstration speech entitled “Classified area gasses”. This provided the stimulus for excellent evaluations given by the three following contestants, Aubrey Govere, Robert de Kramer and Neville Solomon.

Four competed in the International Speech Contest, including Elize Ellis, Crag Ellis, Robert de Kramer and Victor Silas.

“The standard and quality of their speeches were impressive.

“All four speeches were entertaining and worthy of a prize,” said Glencross.

According to the judges Aubrey Govere was selected as the best evaluator and Robert de Kramer was a runner-up. Elize Ellis took the prize in the speech contest with Craig Ellis being selected as the runner-up.

Winners Ellis and Govere will compete in the next level of area contests to be held on Wednesday 15 April.
