Complexes aren’t safe, say police

ALLEN'S NEK – Be vigilant and lock up your house.

The Honeydew Cluster, which includes Sector 1, 3 and 4 had a meeting for townhouse complexes on 24 March, where increased crime incidents were discussed.

The meeting was hosted by Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF).

Honeydew CPF public relations officer Jon Rosenberg explained that townhouse complexes are the main target for house robberies due to easy access.

“The reason why these criminals break into complexes at such an alarming rate is because residents have become too comfortable in their homes. They don’t close their windows or lock all of their doors,” Rosenberg reckoned.

Colonel Tobie Terblanche of Honeydew Police said that the criminals like breaking into complexes because of the safety inside.

“The access control keeps the police out. This means that these criminals can slip in behind a motorist as they enter the property and they follow the driver until he/she stops and then they rob them.”

He added that security guards don’t make the complexes safer as they are easily targeted by criminals.

Rosenberg warned, “Residents are urged not to go outside alone during early morning hours as many incidents have been reported where residents were targeted while going out for a smoke.”

“I thank every resident and security company that attended the meeting,” concluded Rosenberg.
