Homemade baking soda exfoliator

JOBURG – Scrub your face squeaky clean with baking soda.

Written by Claire Brown

Why it is important to exfoliate our faces? As new skin cells are created in the skin’s inner layer (dermis), the old, dead skin cells are pushed to the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). These dead cells will gradually flake off but some of them get trapped, making our complexion look dull, rough and clogs our pores causing acne and other blemishes. Exfoliating the skin removes these dead cells. This also increases your blood flow, resulting in more supple skin.

Baking soda is a personal favorite as an exfoliator. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is the main ingredient in many expensive exfoliation products. Be sure to use a natural baking soda. It’s a natural and effective way of removing dirt, oil and dead skin cells from your face.

How to make your own homemade baking soda facial scrub:

Step 1

Dampen your skin by splashing warm water onto your face with your hands. Pump some of your own creamy cleanser base into your hand to act as a carrier for your baking soda facial scrub.

Step 2

Now pour a teaspoon of baking soda into your hand and mix well to combine with your facial cleanser. A nice optional extra to add is one vitamin E soft liquid gel pill or 1/2 cup of melted organic coconut oil.

Step 3

Massage the cleanser and baking soda onto your skin in circular motions, concentrating especially on areas where you may suffer from dry skin, like around the nose, chin and forehead. Don’t rub too hard, as baking soda can become an irritant. If you experience a sting, rinse off immediately. Rub for 30 seconds.

Step 4

Rinse the baking soda scrub off after 30 seconds. Avoid leaving the scrub on your skin for longer to avoid causing irritation.

Step 5

Use the baking soda facial scrub once a week as part of your skin cleansing regimen.

A little extra tip:

A baking soda scrub is also effective in keeping your body smooth, so try using it on your body in the shower or bath.

Overall, baking soda makes a cheap yet, beautifully effective and gentle skin cleansing scrub. Go on, enjoy it.
