The little giants

Small scale farmers were surprised by size.

Whether you want to call them small scale farmers or micro farmers, there is nothing minute about their pumpkins.

Gerald Loison and his son Willem of Gregor Street in Witpoortjie loves planting vegetables in their back garden. A few months ago they bought a packet of pumpkin seeds but were slightly disappointed when there were only three seeds in the packet.

They planted the seeds in November of last year although it is supposed to be planted at the start of spring.

Loison sr. says he could almost see the Giant Atlantic Pumpkins grow daily. The giants consumed 25 litres of water each every second day.

When they recently harvested the three pumpkins they weighed in at a staggering 105kg, 94kg and 81kg. But, says Loison sr, as far as this cultivar goes these are small. The South African champion pumpkin weighed 353kg and the world record is held by the United States for an Atlantic Giant that weighed in at a mind boggling 900kg.

The Loisons are going to process the pumpkins in a few days and promised the Record they will let us know how edible these little giants are.
