MULTIMEDIA: 1 235km cycle challenge for Sunflower

BRIGHTWATER COMMONS – No distance to far to aid the Sunflower Fund South Africa.

The Cool Runnings Charity Drive departed from Bright Water Commons on 21 March to end in Port Elizabeth, all in the aid of the Sunflower Fund of South Africa.

Ulrich Roux and Clinton de Klerk, among other cyclists of Cool Runnings Charity Drive, are travelling from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth in six days. They will be competing in the Iron Man South Africa event upon their arrival in Port Elizabeth.

“We aim to raise R250 000 for the Sunflower Fund of South Africa and we’re almost two thirds of the way there,” said De Klerk. He further adds, “Thank you to all our unbelievable sponsors and to everyone who donated thus far, as well as the media who have given us some great exposure.”

Family and friends of the cyclists were at the shopping centre to bid farewell to their heroes.

Thelma Roux spoke about her brother’s departure [insert bite].

In total, the distance is about 1 235km, with sponsors for each kilometre and certain tiers such as R10 000 and up.

This is Roux’s second time taking part in the challenge and inspired he De Klerk to follow suit.

“My gran passed away from cancer so when Ulrich asked me to join, I immediately accepted,” said De Klerk.

According to him, it costs R2 000 for a person to be registered as a donor.

“We are aiming to raise enough funds to have more than 100 people registered.”
