RUIMSIG – Coffee and friends to raise funds for the South African Riding for the Disabled Association.

The South African Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda) Gauteng recently held a Coffee and Friends breakfast to help raise funds for their non-profit organisation and to keep it running.

Sarda’s fundraiser Julia Morris said, “I am really passionate about Sarda and working with the children. However, it is a constant uphill battle to keep the centre running with a lack of funds.”

Sarda is an organisation that provides free therapeutic riding for children from special needs facilities and schools. Interactive equine therapy is also offered at the centre in Ruimsig for the elderly and those too disabled or too frail to ride.

Sarda volunteer Lee Goodyear said Sarda gives so much back that her time volunteering to help children is well spent.

“It is amazing seeing the growth of the kids and their reactions,” said Goodyear.

Branch secretary for Sarda Nicole Christie said, “We need to raise funds, that is the aim of the fundraisers we are organising. It feels like we are months from closing our doors because of the lack of funds. It cost about R50 000 a month to run and maintain the area.We have 10 ponies and two miniature donkeys that we also have to see too. Any donations are welcome.

“I love children and this organisation allows me to work with them.We do not only teach them things but we also learn from the children. The different personalities we get here is just amazing.” expressed Sarda volunteer Udelle de Winnaar.

Why riding helps the disabled:

• Teaches new skills

• Promotes an active response from the rider

• Improves balance and co-ordination

• Promotes independence and encourages decision making

• Develops self-discipline and improved self-image

• Encourages communication and social skills
