Following on from my column last week, we continue into the world of Twitter.

Once again, I must express my thanks to Hill and Knowlton Strategies for their assistance in compiling this week’s column.

Once you join the Twitter community, the next step is to find and follow people on Twitter who interest you.

To follow someone means, you are subscribing to their tweets and their updates will appear on your home timeline. The person you follow is also now able to ‘direct message’ you.

For you to follow someone, you will need to click on a username or navigate to a user’s profile. Click the ‘follow’ button when you see it next to a user’s profile

photo or on a user’s profile page. You can also click the ‘follow’ button next to any of your ‘who to follow’ suggestions; next to user search results, or anywhere else where you see the ‘follow’ button on the web.

To know who you are following, you simply click your ‘following’ number on your profile or home page and the people you are following will be displayed in

a list. You can also unfollow users from that page if you don’t want to follow them anymore because their content does not interest you.

The best way to gain friends and fans on Twitter is to engage with people, follow others whose tweets are interesting or meaningful to you, and be an active part of the Twitter community by reading and tweeting high-quality information. You can also reply to other people’s tweets by selecting the ‘reply’ button or you can ‘re-tweet’ their tweet if you think it is interesting and worth sharing.

Now that you are equipped with this information, log onto Twitter and go and find some new, interesting people to follow – who knows, you may even pick up some of your own new followers in the process.

I look forward to your tweets.
