We are the best in the West

We won!

It is official, the Roodepoort record is the best newspaper on the West Rand.

This announcement was made at the annual Caxton Awards function which was held at the Joburg Theatre last night.

The Caxton Awards recognizes excellence in all spheres of print and digital media. This includes the various sizes of advertisements, photographs, best promotion of a newspaper and sales and telesales persons of the year. The theme this year was Amazingly African and employees dressed to the nines.

According to the judges this is a clean, lively newspaper. They commended the record’s use of photographs and eye-catching front pages which make for a good read.

While the record won in the Free Newspaper 24 pages and less category, some of the West Rand staff were nominated in their various categories.

Minette Marais received two highly commended certificates in the Best Written and Designed Medium Magazine Format Advertisement and the Best Written and Designed Large Magazine Format Advertisement. She was also a finalist in the Best Written Medium Sized Advertisement.

The West Rand Get It magazine was a finalist in their category and the winner in the Telesales Person of the Year was awarded to Lianne West.

The record’s sister paper, the Krugersdorp news was a finalist in the Free Newspaper 24 pages and more and the Best Promotion of a Newspaper categories.

Other editorial finalists were Riaan van Zyl for Best Investigative reporting, Clinton Botha (now editor of the Randfontein herald) was a finalist in the Best Feature Photograph and Best Sports Photograph categories. Jacobus Myburgh from the Krugersdorp news was also a finalist in the Best Sports Photograph category.

The editor of the Roodepoort record, Roelien Vorster is ecstatic about the award and praised the team for their hard work, dedication and perseverance. “This is definitely a team effort. This award goes out to the journalists, Riaan van Zyl, Mathilde Myburgh and Sonwabile Antonie, the sub-editors Lorraine Brown and Mariette Brink and our layout artists Sue Sillinds and Graig Micheals. Thank you for your support.”
