Sangoma swindler and co-conspirators in court

Three suspects appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court after they were arrested in connection with a sangoma swindler.

A father who was desperate to have his child, who is suffering of a life-threatening illness healed, was allegedly conned into paying a traditional healer and his accomplices R2,5 million.

EMPD Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago in a press statement on Sunday 15 March confirmed the arrest of three Ugandan nationals after the father approached the department when he began to suspect that he was being tricked by the sangoma.

The father allegedly owed the traditional healer a further R2 million.

A 10 meter-long python was also confiscated during the arrest and handed over to the SPCA.

Kgasago sai the healer allegedly used the snake to heal his patients.

The trio initially appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday 16 March. They face charges of contravention of the Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962 as well as that of theft under false pretenses.
