Goliath, a comedian giant

Comedian Nicholas Goliath

Goliath and Goliath has become a respected name in comedy circles.

Nicholas Goliath together with his cousin Jason and friend Donovan Goliath make up this ensemble.

Nicholas has lived in Florida for more than 20 years and studied at Florida Park High School in 1998. After he graduated, he became a call centre agent for 10 years before deciding to tackle comedy.

He started his comedy journey nine years ago when his friends encouraged him to take the stage at the Comedy Undergound in Melville.

“I used to watch comedians on stage at the Comedy Underground and my friends urged me to go on stage. I contacted the owners on a Tuesday and they told me that I could perform on Sunday. I only had a few days to prepare my material. I did about three sets that year then I stopped doing comedy for a while,” said Nicholas.

Nicholas loved comedy from a young age, watching comedy legends Eddie Murphy and Richard Prior who inspired him.

“I’ve always loved comedy, the idea of being on stage and making an entire audience laugh and forget about the problems for the duration of your set,” said Nicholas.

In 2011, Jason approached Nicholas and together with Donovan started AWednesday.

Now they have brought AWednesday to the Roodepoort Theatre. They will perform at the venue on the last Wednesday of every month.

“We want to bring comedy to the theatre and plan one-man shows where people can laugh and have a good time,” he said.

His family was surprised by his decision to become a comedian and thought the career move would only be temporary.

“My family didn’t believe that I was a comedian, they thought that maybe it’s something I would do for a few months but now they slowly starting to believe,” he said.

“We started AWedndesday to provide a platform for other talented comedians because we did not have those stages to perform. My goal in comedy is not to win awards but to make people smile and laugh. Thats why I love being a comedian and the fact that I’ve performed at the lyric theatre is amazing. I would love to use this platform and become a motivational speaker to the youth. I feel the youth are undervalued and underappreciated in this country. I want to motivate them to do better,” added Nicholas.

Goliath and Goliath also represent and manage eight comedians.

Goliath and Goliath will be embarking on their first tour this year and have already started in Pietermaritzburg.

The trio will be recording their DVD titled Awe Mzansi at the Lyric Theatre on 02 April and will include acts such as Alfred Adriaan and Richelieu Beaunoir.

Tickets are available R120 and Nicholas promises the show will be mad entertaining.
